(HSL stands for Heathen Soul Lore)
Winifred Hodge Rose
Mod and Hugr both interact in important ways with the Sefa soul. Hugr is Sefa’s inner warder, and Mod creates with Sefa an inner space and capacity called Modsefa, where important soul-qualities reside. You’ll be working more with Sefa-soul in Step 13; here the focus is on how these three souls relate to each other.
Reading
Read Book I (Heathen Soul Lore Foundations), Chapter 12: “Sefa: The Soul of Relationship,” or the website article of the same name. This will give you general, research-based information about Sefa. If you need to, review Book I Chapter 8: “Dances with Daemons: The Mod Soul,” and Chapter 10 “Who is Hugr?” or the website articles of the same name.

Read Book II (A Personal Approach) Chapter 12: “Sefa, Hugr, and Modsefa,” or Study Guide 12 of the same name on this website, and work through those exercises in your Daybook or Workbook. This will help you learn more about your own Sefa.

Practice Notes
Sefa, Hugr, and Mod (along with Hama) are the most Midgard-oriented of our souls. Their capacities and interests, and also their flaws, are focused on the challenges and intricacies of our Midgard life and our interactions with other humans and society. By understanding these souls and their interactions with each other we create a firm basis for an ethical and fulfilling life here in Midgard.
Bindrunes
I have designed bindrunes that express some of my perceptions of each of the souls, shown in Book II and in the Study Guides on this website. If you have some familiarity with rune-lore, I encourage you to use this bindrune that expresses the supportive interactions among Sefa, Hugr, Mod, and Modsefa, and / or create your own bindrune for this purpose. If you are not up for creating a bindrune right now, you’re also welcome to meditate on single runes that seem related to the soul-interactions discussed in the reading material and these exercises.
Work with your soul-tokens, if you are using them
When you are doing the reading, writing the exercises, meditating, communing with the Deities and spirits, using divination or spaeworking, and working with bindrunes or single runes, keep the token(s) you have already made with you. You will have Hugr and Mod tokens already, if you are using them, but I suggest waiting until Step 13 to make and hallow your Sefa token.
Divination and spaeworking
If you like to use runes or another system of divination, by all means use them to explore more questions and insights about how your Sefa, Hugr, and Modsefa interact in your life, and record them in your Daybook. Likewise, if you are experienced with spaeworking, seidhcraft, or similar esoteric or magical work, these are excellent ways to explore the souls, but should not be pursued before learning proper methods and precautions as I discussed in earlier Steps.
Initiation Ceremony
Mod and Hugr ceremonies were done in previous Steps if you chose to do them. The Sefa initiation will be done during the next Step.
