Here I want to recommend an outstanding article by Alissa Sorenson about evidence for, and the roles of, folk and ceremonial dance in Heathen tradition. In addition to a detailed survey of dance customs in the past, Alissa discusses the roles it can play in Heathen practice today, and ends with instructions for two Heathen-oriented folk dances that she designed herself. One is “Hammer Dance: Thor’s Harvest Dance,” and the other is “Gathering Peasecods: May Couples Dance,” to be performed around a Maypole. I have danced both of them on several occasions during Heathen Moots, and they are delightful!
