(HSL stands for Heathen Soul Lore)

Mod and Hugr have a number of overlapping and interacting characteristics. Both of them are strong motivators of our desires, intentions, actions and deeds.
Reading
First read Book I (Heathen Soul Lore Foundations), Chapter 8: “Dances with Daemons: The Mod Soul,” and Chapter 10: “Who is Hugr,” or the website articles of the same names.

(Two additional or supplementary chapters / articles about the Hugr are Chapter 9: “Hunting the Wild Hugr,” and Chapter 11: “The Occult Activities of the Hugr,” or website articles of the same names listed under “Soul Lore,” which you can read if you wish.)
Then read Book II (A Personal Approach) Chapter 8: “Mod and Hugr: Motivating Forces,” or Study Guide 8 of the same name, and work through those exercises in your Daybook or Workbook.

Practice Notes
This Step is focused on perceiving the strong influences that Mod’s and Hugr’s motivating forces have upon our lives. The forces of Will and Desire, Mod and Hugr, are closely related to each other as are Mod and Hugr, and drive much of our Midgard activity. A deep understanding of these forces helps us orient our actions and behaviors in ways that we choose based on their worth to us, rather than being at the mercy of subconscious forces pushing us in directions that may not fit with our true desires and our best long-term interests.
Bindrunes
I have designed bindrunes that express some of my perceptions of each of the souls, shown in Book II and in the Study Guides on my website. If you have some familiarity with rune-lore, I encourage you to use my Mod & Hugr bindrune for meditation, and / or create your own Mod & Hugr bindrune and use that one. If you are not up for creating a bindrune right now, you’re also welcome to meditate on single runes that seem related to your Mod & Hugr souls and how they provide many of the underlying motivators in your Midgard life.
Work with your soul-tokens, if you are using them
When you are doing the reading, writing the exercises, meditating, communing with the Deities and spirits, using divination or spaeworking, and working with bindrunes or single runes, keep the token(s) you have already made with you. If you plan to make tokens for Mod and Hugr, I suggest you wait until the next Steps, Step 9 for Mod and Step 10 for Hugr, where your focus will be on each of them separately. Make your Mod token during Step 9, and your Hugr token during Step 10.
Divination and spaeworking
If you like to use runes or another system of divination, by all means use them to explore more questions and insights about how your Mod and Hugr souls affect your motivations in life, and record them in your Daybook. Likewise, if you are experienced with spaeworking, seidhcraft, or similar esoteric or magical work, these are excellent ways to explore the souls, but should not be pursued before learning proper methods and precautions as I discussed in the first Steps of the program.
Initiation Ceremonies
I recommend that you wait until Step 9 for Mod’s initiation ceremony, and Step 10 for Hugr’s, if you plan to conduct these ceremonies.
